How to Get to the Symposium Site

From Iasi Airport:

There is a bus from the Iasi airport to downtown. The TAROM Agency is marked T on the map. Once in the center, you can take a taxi; they usually charge 6,500 lei /km. The cost up to the University should be about 30,000 Romanian Lei ( 1 US$ = 34000 ROL). Alternatively, you can take tram no. 1, 4, 8, or 13 for two stops up to the "Universitate" (University stop). The Faculty of Electronics and Telecommunications is located across the tram station, on the lefthand side, marked SCS 2003 on the map. The price of a ticket, which can be bought from the driver, is 6,000 ROL. The main public transportation stops are marked PT on the map. Walking (uphill) to the symposium site would not take more than 15 minutes.
From Iasi Train Station:

The main railway station is marked R1 on the map. There is no direct bus or tram to the symposium location. You can take tram line no. 3 or 6 for one stop to "Piata Unirii" station and then transfer across the rails to one of the tram lines no. 1, 4, 8, or 13 (going in the reverse direction) for two stops to "Universitate" (University) station. The Faculty of Electronics and Telecommunications is located across the tram station, on the left-hand side, marked SCS 2003 on the map. The price of a ticket, which can be bought from the driver, is 6,000 ROL. The main public transportation stops are marked PT on the map. Walking (uphill) to the symposium site would take some 25 minutes.


Getting from Bucharest to Iasi
By plane:

Monday to Friday (except Tuesday) there are daily flights scheduled from "Otopeni" Airport in Bucharest to Iasi. The timetable of the flights is:

A return ticket is 133 USD and an one-way ticket is 95 USD. Once arrived in Iasi, it takes approximatively 10 minutes by bus from the airport to the downtown area (please see Getting to the Symposium Site too).

By train:

There are several possibilities for transport from/to the airport:
Bus no. 783 ( from the "Otopeni" Airport to downtown Bucharest (and return). A two-trip card is 30,000 ROL (about 0.8 US$). During workdays the bus operates every 15 minutes between 07.00 and 22.00 and every 30 minutes between 05.00-07.00 and 22.00-24.00. During weekends the bus operates every 30 minutes from 05.00 to 24.00. If you prefer a taxi, don’t forget to negotiate the price! A fair price is less than 500,000 ROL (about 15 US$).
You should get down at "Piata Victoriei" ( "Victory Square") station and take the subway to "Gara de Nord" railway station ( the subway fare for a card is about 15,000 ROL, (some 0.3 US$)). By train, the journey from Bucharest to Iasi is of about 6 hours. A first class one way train ticket varies from about 400,000 to 600,000 ROL (less than 20 US$).

The Iasi railway station is at about 15 minutes walk from downtown. The tram ticket is less than a quarter of 1 US$ and the taxi fare is less than 5 US$.

By car:

The distance between Bucharest and Iasi is approximately 400 km. There is no highway connecting the two cities. The off-city speed limit is 90km/h, and 50 km/h within city limits.

Accommodation
A number of hotel rooms of various categories have been reserved by SCS 2003 Symposium.

The most convenient way to the Symposium Site is to get a taxi. Alternatively you may: From Unirea and Traian Hotels: - take tram no. 1, 4, 8, or 13 for two stops, till "Universitate" (University stop). The Faculty of Electronics and Telecommunications is located near the station, on the left side (SCS 2003 on the map). From Moldova and Orizont Hotels: - take tram no. 1 for 6 stations, till "Universitate" (University stop). From the Students Hostel (University campus)

The most convenient way to the Symposium Site is to get a taxi.

 
Local Transportation

Bus, tram, trolley bus

The network of buses, trams and trolley buses in Iasi is quite efficient and effective. The price of a ticket is 6,000 ROL and it can be bought from special booths or from the driver.

Current daytime rate is 6,500 ROL /km . Some extra charges may apply for night or weekend transportation.

Other useful info:

Weather : At the beginning of July the weather is fine, only some scattered showers and the average temperature is about 30 C.

Time Zone: Eastern European Time (UT+3).

Currency: The local currency is Romanian Lei (ROL). The approximate exchange rate is about 34,000 LEI for 1 US$ and about 39,000 LEI for 1 Euro. For various transactions and money exchange, we recommend you to contact only authorized institutions, such as banks or exchange offices. Foreign exchange facilities are available at Otopeni Airport, main railway stations and in most hotels in Bucharest and Iasi . Opening hours for Banks: Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 1:30pm, closed on weekends. Visitors are advised to bring some cash with them or to exchange some money when entering the country. VISA and Travelers Checks are accepted at most banks.

Language: Romanian, which is a Latin family language, spoken throughout Romania; most of the community understands and speaks English and French. Most of the hotels and restaurants staffs speaks English and French.

Electricity: Electricity is supplied at: 220 volts / 50 Hz.

Internet Access: During the conference computers with Internet access will be available at the Conference Centre. They are reserved for participants to read and send e-mails, view conference related or other web sites. You may also use commercial Internet Café’s at a rate of about 18,000 ROL for one hour (0.5 US$).

Welcome cocktail will take place at the University Library Hall (on Symposium site location), on July 9, 2003 at 8:00 P.M.

Banquet will take place at Onyx Restaurant, on July 10, 2003, at 6:30 P.M.

Farewell cocktail will take place at the University Library Hall (on Symposium site location), on July 11, 2003 at 8:00 P.M.

A bus will be available for taking the participants to the banquet site with the following schedule:
